Tree Planting at Ngubi Forest
A tree planting partnership for individuals, groups, organisations and institutions, based in Ngubi Forest and supported by Kenya Forest Service and Kijabe Forest Trust.
Kenya's forest cover has been below the level the country needs for a long time. As of 2021 it stood at under 9 percent, below the 10 percent minimum set out in the Constitution. In response, the government has committed to planting 15 billion trees by 2032, which would bring national tree cover to 30 percent and restore 10.6 million hectares of degraded land.
Reaching that target not only depends on how many go into the ground, but on whether the trees planted survive long enough to become forest. This is something monitoring groups have already raised; there is a gap between seedlings planted and trees that actually take root, and it is the part that is harder to see and to track.
When we approached the Kenya Forest Service for support, they advised us to plan in thousands rather than in tens or hundreds, since planting at that scale, done in phases, is more likely to add up to real, lasting forest cover. We have built our tree planting partnership around that advice.

Tree planting has become a common item on CSR and ESG calendars, and increasingly an item people ask questions about. At Ngubi, your organisation plants in a specific, named part of Ngubi Forest, on a documented planting day, with partners who can confirm what happens to the trees afterward.
A Specific Location
Your trees are planted at marked locations in Ngubi Forest, and you can return with your team and see the same ground again.
Planting at Scale
We plan planting days in the thousands phased across the year, in line with KFS recommendations.
Can Be Combined With Other Activities
A planting day can be paired with team building, a guided forest walk, or an overnight stay at our camp.
Where Our Seedlings Come From
We do not yet grow our own seedlings. We source them from two established nurseries who already know this forest.
Kijabe Forest Trust, our community conservation partner, runs a nursery and restoration team across their roughly 6,000-hectare focal area of the Kikuyu Escarpment. Their seedlings are indigenous species, grown for this specific forest.
Uplands Forest Station, the Kenya Forest Service station Ngubi operates inside, propagates seedlings at larger volumes. Between the two, each planting day is matched to seedlings suited to that particular ground.
What Happens on a Planting Day
A planting day at Ngubi is guided. Your group is taken to the specific section of forest set aside for that day, briefed on what is being planted and why, and given the tools and direction needed to plant properly.
It can also be combined with our other services, with many groups adding a planting session onto a team-building activity or an overnight camp.
Room to Grow
1,950 Hectares
This is the size of the Ngubi block within Uplands Forest Station, our home ground. Not all of it is under tree cover yet. Between open ground, thinning plantation areas, and land set aside for restoration, there is space here for a partnership to grow into over several years. We welcome partners who want to help fill that space.
